ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSICS
Postgraduate
Α Degree awarded by a Greek public University or by a recognized foreign Institution of equivalent status or by a Technological Education Institute is required.
For obtaining the M.Sc. degree from the Graduate Program on "Environmental Physics" of the Physics Department students are required to successfully complete the courses offered during 4 semesters which correspond to 120 ECTS. In the first three semesters (of 30 ECTS each) students must attend and be examined successfully in 5 background and general-knowledge courses, 6 scientific-area and skill-development courses and 4 elective courses (scientific-area and skill-development). The program includes a total of 14 electives, of which triggered a year 6-8. In 4th semester (30 ECTS) students accomplish a Master-degree thesis, which is presented publicly and subsequently reviewed by a three-member evaluation committee. The aim of the Program is to provide high-level postgraduate education in order to produce specialized Environmental Physicists, capable to meet the requirements of the labor-market for the management of environmental problems, such as, air pollution in local and global scales, the impact of industrial activities, and the global changes in the atmosphere and climate.
In particular, the graduates of the Program acquire skills that enable them to: a) analyze environmental data, b) conduct measurements of environmental parameters, c) produce environmental impact reports, and d) use specialized software, GIS systems, atmospheric models, and databases. Furthermore, the graduates acquire the ability to work either independently, or in groups, in research activities, in many cases within international research projects, to seek new knowledge and bibliographic information on the latest scientific developments, to present and defend their work to third parties, while in general are familiarized with research for investigating local, regional and global environmental problems. Finally, graduates develop a wide scientific knowledge in the field of Environmental Physics and the flexibility to adapt to new research areas relevant, or simply associated, to the field of their studies.
The scientific background of the graduates allows them to work in entities dealing with environmental impact assessments and with decision making on environmental protection policies, sustainable development and forecasting of environmental hazards at national and international scales. Professional employment opportunities for graduates are offered at ministries, municipalities, city-authorities, public and private entities, industries, public bodies, media, as well as in secondary and higher education and at various research institutions.
Not applicable.
The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to doctoral studies.
A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education.
Άριστα (Arista) Excellent: 8.50-10.00
Λίαν Καλώς (Lian Kalos) Very Good : 6.50- 8.49
Καλώς (Kalos) Good : 6.00-6.49
Ανεπιτυχώς (Anepitychos) Fail: 0-5.99
Minimum passing grade : 6.
4 SEMESTERS, 120 ECTS.
A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B). Each course is credited with a number of ECTS (>=2) according to the studentworkload (contact hours, laboratory work, examination etc) and accumulation of credits (ECTS) is accomplished after successful completion of the course.
