Upper Secondary Degree (Six Years of Studies) - National Level Examination
To graduate from the School of English, students must attend and successfully complete a series of core,required-elective and elective courses. Students are required to choose their courses from the Schoolfour areas of specialisation: Applied linguistics, English literature, American literature, Translation and Intercultural studies.
The Schoolundergraduate degree scheme produces graduates with excellent training in the fields of linguistics, literature, translation, culture and the teaching of English as a foreign language. It also provides its graduates with theoretical knowledge, critical ability and methodological tools that could lead to advanced research in higher education, or professional careers in education or high-ranking jobs in the private and public sectors. To be more specific, the Schoolgraduates acquire training and skills in the following areas: 1) teaching English as a foreign language; 2) the study and teaching of literatures written in English; 3) cultural structures and institutions and 4) translation theory and practice.
Further to the specialized knowledge of their discipline and profession, graduates of the School of English also learn skills that would allow them to 1) apply knowledge in practice; 2) locate, possess, analyse and synthesise data and information using new technologies; 3) adapt to novel situations; 4) make decisions; 5) work independently or in groups; 6) work in interdisciplinary environments; 7) generate new research ideas and 8) demonstrate professional and ethical responsibility and sensitivity to issues of gender, difference and multicultural diversity.
These skills and knowledge allow the Schoolgraduates to seek employment in primary- and secondary-education schools in the private and public sectors, translation offices, the publishing industry, banks, multinational companies, especially in their translation departments, and, finally, the field of professional interpreting.
Additional professional qualification is not required for the public or private sector.
The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to postgraduate studies
A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education. The grading scheme in the Ptychio (Ministerial Decision no Φ.1231/Β1/425 art.60, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1099/2000/B) is as follows:
Άριστα (Arista) Excellent: 8.50 - 10.00
Λίαν Καλώς (Lian Kalos) Very Good: 6.50 - 8.49
Καλώς (Kalos) Good: 5.00 - 6.49
Minimum Passing grade: 5
8 SEMESTERS, 240 ECTS.
A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 466/2007/B). A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester.
