Upper secondary degree (6 years of studies). National level examination.

In order to obtain the History and Archaeology degree students are required to attend all classes and pass the exams of all compulsory modules: introductory, specialization, specialization seminars and a choice of compulsory modules. The University also offers optional modules. The exams are written or oral. The Department offers two majors: A. History B. Archaeology and History of Art. Students may do in service training in public galleries, museums, research centers, high-schools, and other institutions. Students majoring in Archaeology and History of Art may participate in excavations in archaeological sites of Northern Greece.

The Undergraduate Curriculum of the History and Archaeology Department aims to provide historians, archaeologists and art historians with the knowledge and skills to acquire an in-depth understanding of human societies and cultures from the origins of the human species to the present. The Department will also provide graduates with the knowledge, understanding and experience of research methods and practices in history, archaeology and the history of art as well as familiarity with the application of these disciplines vis a vis contemporary society. The course aims to enhance the graduatespportunities for employment in education, conservation, presentation of monuments, and Cultural Heritage Management.

Graduates, according to their area of interest in specialization and their chosen practice, will acquire the necessary skills for: a) History teaching in secondary education, b) the preservation, study and presentation of archaeological monuments, c) scientific research in the history and culture (from the Paleolithic era to modern times) in various scientific facilities and Institutes in Greece and internationally, e) organizing and participating in the outreach of historical, archaeological, art-historical and anthropological knowledge in museums and various training courses to do with public history, archaeology, history of art and social anthropology, f) providing expertise on issues of bioarchaeology, extensive techniques of archaeological resources, culture, theory of archaeology, theory of art as well as specific issues (numismatic, epigraphical, sigillographical), g) providing services on issues of filing and archive/collection organization on a local, national and international footing, h) performing archaeological excavations, conducting archaeological survey (surface research) and art-historical, ethnographic, folklore and historical field research, i) providing documentation of cultural artifacts and j) providing expertise relevant to their major to civil service commissions.

Graduates of the History and Archaeology Department also acquire the skills to: a) apply their knowledge of the fields of history, archaeology and history of art, b) work in groups of international mix, c) work in an interdisciplinary environment, d) develop and carry out research plans, e) coordinate team work for the highest possible degree of productivity, f) understand and respect cultural diversity, g) show consideration for cultural and gender diversity, h) respect the importance of preserving cultural and environmental heritage observing professional, social and moral responsibility and i) promote free thinking in the fields of history, archaeology and history of art.

Graduates are classified (Law 1566/1985, 14.8.b) as educational personnel of the category "University Education 2-Philologists" to be employed as teachers in Public and Private High Schools.

The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to postgraduate studies.

A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education.

A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System) (1 ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmοnized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/Β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B).
