Upper secondary degree (6 years of studies). National level examination.
The chemical engineering undergraduate programme of studies, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, has a duration of five years. The chemical engineering curriculum is organized in ten (10) full-time semesters (two per academic year).
Upon successful completion of all the course requirements of the chemical engineering programme, the student receives a Diploma degree in Chemical Engineering. In particular, all registered students of the chemical engineering programme at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are required to attend and successfully pass forty (40) compulsory courses and ten (10) elective courses that are included in the chemical engineering curriculum. Elective courses constitute one cycle of general knowledge and four (4) cycles of specialization, such as: 1. Energy - Environment, 2. Food Engineering - Biotechnology, 3. Materials Science - Nanotechnology, 4. Advanced Studies in Chemical Engineering. Each cycle is offering 8-10 courses, while all of them include practice in the industry in a specified area. . In addition, during the last semester of their studies, the students must work on their Diploma Thesis. This includes the technical and scientific elaboration of a specific research project, the submission of a written Diploma Thesis and the successful defense and examination of their research thesis by a three-member committee. The course weight for the Diploma Thesis is equivalent to the total weight of seven (7) compulsory courses and contributes to the diploma degree with 30 ECTS credits.
Chemical Engineers are involved with the design and manufacturing of chemical, biochemical products and materials, energy production from solid and liquid fuels, as well as, renewable sources, air and waste water treatment and environmental protection, bioprocesses, biochemical and biomedical engineering, food engineering, information technologies, process optimization and control, new process design and plant management. To respond to the above multiple professional tasks, chemical engineers need to understand and solve a wide range of physical, chemical and biological problems covering four distinct scales: i) Atomic/Molecular scale, ii) Micro-scale, iii) Meso-scale and iv) Macro-scale.
A Chemical Engineer is involved with the design, scaling-up, operation, optimization and automation of physical, chemical and biological processes aiming at the production of desired chemical, biochemical products and materials in a sustainable and energy-efficient way with a minimum environmental impact.
After the successful completion of the undergraduate program of the Department the students are expected to possess the required scientific knowledge, capabilities and skills in order to be able to:
-Conceive, design and manage processes involved in the production, transformation and transport of products (materials and energy). Participate in research, development, improvement and technical support activities of industrial production methods.
-Conduct construction, operation and technical support studies of industrial production plants and manage or lead related projects.
-Carry out inspections, audits, arbitrations on issues related to energy, atmospheric pollution, safety and health at work, risk assessment or remedying of environmental damages after industrial accidents.
-Conduct studies related to environmental impact, risk assessment and management, restoration, quality assurance, safety and hygiene at work.
-Possess the required autonomy that enables him/her to work individually as well as in cooperation with other colleagues, manage complicated professional activities, take the responsibility of his/her own decisions, possess the required maturity for critical vision on the science and profession of Chemical Engineering and awareness of the professional and moral responsibility towards the society and the environment.
According to the Greek legislation, a professional qualification licence which is awarded by the Technical Chamber of Greece, is indispensable for new Chemical Engineering graduates in order to be employed in the private and public sectors.
The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to postgraduate studies (2nd and 3rd Cycle).
A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education.

A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B).
