Specialised knowledge on metals microstructure and its effect on mechanical properties.
Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to - understand the general principles of solidification, the solidification of the metallic materials, the effect of solidification parameters on the microstructure and properties of metallic materials. - acquire the knowledge of the main principles governing the design of casting metals and alloys. - identify casting defects and to understand how to prevent as well as to detect them.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Solidification Processing: Introduction, Solidification-General principles, Nucleation (homogeneous and heterogeneous), Growth (Basic concepts, solidification of single-phase metals and alloys, dendritic growth, peritectic solidification, eutectic solidification, microsegregation),Cooling curves and undercooling, Morphologies of planar, dendritic and cellular growth during solidification. Physicochemical properties of metallic materials: Interaction of molten metals with various gases as well as refractory materials. Cleaning process of molten metals and furnaces used for their melting. The Structure of Castings (Macrostructure, control of grain structure in cast metals), Heat flow in solidification, Risering (risering pure materials, risering alloys, riser location, riser shape, riser size, theoretical considerations). Gating design, Defects in casting, Inspection of casting.
