Specialized knowledge in processes issues, microstructure and material properties.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - understand the connection between the microstructure of properties and the processes of materials. - get to know the basic characteristics of material imperfections and understand their role in the properties of materials - understand the basic mechanisms of corrosion of materials - understand the basic mechanisms of individual diffusion of materials and formulate Fick's laws - become familiar with techniques and methods for determining the mechanical behavior of metal materials

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to materials, Imperfections of crystal structure, (point defect, line defects, planar and interfacial defects, three dimensional volume defects). Grains, Grain boundaries, Microstructure, Solid state diffusion (mechanisms, Fick diffusion laws), Solid state phase transformations (pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic transformation), Isothermal cooling diagrams (TTT diagrams), Strengthening mechanisms of metallic materials (Work hardening, Solid solution strengthening and alloying, Precipitation hardening, Dispersion strengthening, Grain boundary strengthening, Transformation hardening). Fracture (brittle, ductile, morphology of fracture surfaces). Fatigue and Creep (description, characteristics of mechanical tests, factors affecting strength), Corrosion and oxidation of metal materials, Surface engineering (friction-wear), Ceramic materials.
