Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to be able: (a) To understand and explain fault creation/existence in an area of certain tectonic geotectonic setting, on the basis of surface observations and the determination/study of fault plane solutions. (b) To explain and determine the probable evolution of a seismic activity in an area, on the basis of the knowldge on the spatiotemporal variation of various parameters which they will be able to calculate during the seismic activation.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Brittle fracture of rock (theoretical concepts, experimental studies, the brittle-plastic transition). Rock friction (theoretical concepts, experimental observations, stick slip and stable sliding and friction under geological conditions). Mechanics of faulting (formation and growth of faults, fault rocks and structures, stength and rheology of faults) Mechanics of earthquakes (historical development and theoretical background, earthquake phenomenology, cases studies of known earthquakes, mechanics of complex and compound earthquakes).
