Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.) was founded in 1925 as the second Greek university and today it is the biggest in the country. The main campus is located in the center of the city of Thessaloniki and covers around 43 hectares, while some educational and administrative facilities are located off campus, outside Thessaloniki or even in other cities.            

It comprises in total 41 Schools organized into 11 Faculties, of which 1 single-School Faculty (Law). At A.U.Th. are operating 61 Clinics (Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Faculties), 295 Laboratories and 23 Study Halls. A.U.Th.’s Central Library, one of the biggest in the Balkan region, together with 47 peripheral libraries of Faculties and Schools (17 of which institutionalized) form its library system. 

Operates 41 bachelor degree programmes and 68 master degree programmes in individual Faculties and Schools, as well as interdisciplinary, inter-university and international. Furthermore there are 23 collaborations with foreign universities for co-supervised PhD, for Greek and foreign doctoral candidates.

64.000 undergraduate and more than 10.000 postgraduate and PhD students, of which 3.966 are international students, are registered in the Faculties and Schools of A.U.Th. 

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participates actively in International Meetings, such as the International Association of Universities, European Association of Universities, Coimbra Group, EMUNI, AUF-Francophonie, European University of Beijing, TIME, etc., as well as in 35 International Associations, Organizations and Networks and 5 International Student Associations.

In the framework of European Educational Programmes there are 593 active bilateral agreements for students and faculty exchange. Furthermore A.U.Th. has nowadays 108 Agreements for Scientific Cooperation with equivalent Universities or Higher Institutions of Europe, Balkan and Black Sea countries, Russia, USA, Canada, Australia, Africa, Latin America, Near, Middle and Far East.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the leading University in mobility among all the Greek Higher Education Institutions. About 1200 Greek and foreign students moved in 2012-2013.

A.U.Th. participates in 48 Research Networks, implements more than 1.400 national, European and international research projects per year and cooperates closely with many universities, research institutions and enterprises in Greece and abroad. The main objectives of A.U.Th.’s research activities are the promotion of young researchers, while promoting new directions and implementation of innovative quality systems. Furthermore, the enhancement of cultural heritage as well as the dissemination of cultural goods, such as language, is one of the main aims of the University’s research activity.

The Teaching and Research Staff are 2.048 people, the Special Scientific Teaching Staff 48 people and the Special Laboratory Staff 202 people; 152 members of Special Technical Laboratory Staff and 719 administrative staff assist further the educational work.
