Course Content (Syllabus)
In this two-fold course journalism is being studied in relation both to persuasion and argumentation, and to the various types of literary and art criticism. First, the genres of opinion journalism are described in a contrastive manner and then each genre is construed within its situational and cultural context. Furthermore, the layout of a newspaper’s opinion pages is explained and the symbolic value of the opinion articles as semiotic objects is discussed as well. Next, on the basis of small corpora coming from Greek newspapers and magazines, a systematic approach of most of the opinion genres (editorial, comment, column, chronicle, review, etc) is attempted. The study covers both the structural (schematic structure, text types) and the linguistic (lexico-grammatical) properties of these genres.
