Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the course is to provide the conceptual means that help toward an understanding of the relationship between education and the fundamental aspects of human existence. The course consists of four modules. The first is on human nature and the way in which it makes education possible and necessary. The second module is on human labour and its relation to education. Labour is viewed as a determinative field for creation and the development of culture. This module explores the relationship between education and the social division of labour, the contrast between specialised vocational education and liberal education, as well as the problems pertaining to the educational aspects of alienated and emancipated labour. The third module deals with the human personality. At this stage education is viewed in connection with the development of a consciousness and the construction of a meaning of life and social ideals, while also highlighting the interpersonal nature of pedagogy. The fourth module examines various theories regarding the aims and ideals of education (liberalism, analytic philosophy, humanistic and radical traditions).
