Learning Outcomes
The course aims to familiarize students with the methods and models used by economists to analyze industries. After the end of the semester, the student should have understood and be able to analyze using models of industrial economics:
• the relationship between market structure and pricing and prosperity
• strategic pricing and non-pricing behavior of firms
• pricing in vertically separated and integrated firms and welfare effects
• strategic vertical interdependence of firms and the impact of vertical contracts on consumer prices
• the conclusions of the models for competition policy or antitrust
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course studies market structures characterized by the presence of monopoly power. We present the basic oligopoly model with homogeneous or differentiated products (monopoly / cartel, Cournot, Bertrand, Stackelberg), strategic issues regarding linear and non-linear pricing, price discrimination, measurement of monopoly power and concentration in an industry, vertical and horizontal mergers and their impact on the market structure and the degree of monopoly power. Particular emphasis will be given to the theory of vertical relations between firms (e.g. supplier-retailer). Competition policy in the EU.
