Course Content (Syllabus)
This semester we shall study the cultural repercussions of cultural bilingualism, the condition of writing literature in more than one language. The course will start with a rigorous overview of the rich theoretical work on literary bilingualism. We shall then study in depth two Modern Greek novelists who are quintessentially bilingual, Vassilis Alexakis and Panos Karnezis. One of our major aims is to consider bilingualism as a norm and not an exception in literary history.
