Knowledge of quantitative chemical analysis, soil science and soil chemistry basics.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Become familiar with methods of classical and especially instrumental chemical analysis. 2. Carry out the most common laboratory methods for the determination of the major metals and non-metals in soils, waters and plant tissues. 3. Interpret the results of chemical analysis.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Soil sampling and pretreatment. Elementary soil analysis, dissolution with HF and fusion with Na2CO3. Basics of atomic absorption spectrometry, flame photometry and Uv-Vis spectrometry. Determination of Al, Si, Fe, Ca, Mg, Na, K and trace elements. Saturation paste, collection of soil saturation extract, centrifugation method. Determination of water soluble cations and anions. Determination of soil pH and lime requirements of acid soils. Determination of organic matter and total N. Extraction and characterization of chemical substances(humic and fulvic acids). Cation exchange capacity and ion exchange, exchange isotherms. Ion sorption and sorption isotherms. Determination of soil available nutrients. Sampling and analysis of waters and assessment of their quality for different uses. Wet oxidation and dry ashing of plant tissues. Determination of nutrients in plant tissues.
