Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the Geographic Information Science and spatial analysis with the main objectives of understanding the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the processing and analysis of geospatial data, the use of tools and methods for solving complex environmental problems related to the management of natural resources. The main aim in the applications of geographical analysis is to make decisions based on the examination of variables related to the phenomenon under study. Particular emphasis will be placed on the possibilities of spatial analysis for the timely identification, evaluation and prioritization of geospatial problems, in order to achieve rational solutions through a system of options. An example of an application could be the spatial assessment of biomass from timber extraction and the identification of optimal locations for the installation of processing infrastructure. This course will enable students to understand concepts and methods of multi-criteria analysis and analytical hierarchy using spatial data. Therefore, they will be able to use their knowledge with the ultimate goal of more efficient use of resources, ecological design, development of innovations in products and services in the field of bio-economy, etc.
