Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to approach and examine the utilization of residual forest biomass as a renewable energy source. The importance of this course lies in the urgent need to find alternative ways of energy production with reduced enviromental impact. This course allows students to understand key concepts such as "bioenergy", "biofuels", "biomass", focusing on lignocellulosic materials which are the most extensive source of renewable energy. The course lists the sources from which forest biomass can come (logging residues, wood industry residues, crop residues, wood waste, small diameter logs etc.). The main benefits as well as the weaknesses of forest biomass as a raw material for energy production and the role it plays as an alternative form of renewable energy source is clarified. The availability of forest biomass, the flow and dispersal / seasonality of the raw material, as well as the factors by which they are affected are examined. The ways of converting biomass into energy are analyzed, the conversion methodologies, the necessary equipment, advantages, disadvantages and the prospects for future use / development of the methods are examined. Finally, the energy potential of forest biomass is examined. Upon successful completion of the course, students will also be familiar with the quality and quality control of biofuels.
