Learning Outcomes
The purpose of the course is to provide students with knowledge related to: • the main factors taken into account in the design and construction of furniture and other wooden constructions, which affect their stability and durability. • the anthropometric characteristics and principles of ergonomics applied to the design and construction of different types of furniture and wooden constructions. • raw materials, their selection criteria, suitability of wood species for each construction, selection of other materials, adhesives, finishes, coatings, preservatives/protective substances, etc. • connection methods, fasteners, joints, etc., load transfer, control of loads generated and transfered by the constructions • quality control of furniture and wooden structures, strength and elasticity control of joints • standardization, certification of wooden constructions, marketing of furniture/constructions in our country, possibilities of recycling constructions, recovery of woody material, risks arising during the use of constructions and furniture. The knowledge that the students will acquire will be particularly useful in their dealings with the purchase, use, design and construction of furniture/woodwork. They will acquire knowledge on the selection of materials, adhesives, the joining of wooden members, standardization, certification, marketing, correct use and recycling of constructions and furniture.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Review of the design and manufacturing techniques of furniture and other constructions made of wood. Rhythmology, functionality and principles of ergonomics in the design of constructions - furniture. Main forms of furniture/woodwork from antiquity to the present day. Construction materials – suitable types of wood and how to choose them based on their properties, loading methods, exposure conditions, etc., coexistence of wood with composite wood products (non-glued, glued, chipboard, OSB, CLT, etc.), wood with other materials (glass, metal, foam materials, fabrics, etc.). Connections (types of connection, connecting media, wood joints, metal connections, etc.). Wooden constructions and outdoor furniture: country furniture, playgrounds, bridges, coffee tables, dining rooms, sunbeds, benches, pergolas, gazebos, shed boxes, planters, wooden packaging, beehives, frames, etc. and peculiarities arising in their design/construction. Wooden constructions and interior furniture - coverings, floors, stairs, upholstered furniture, toys, bookcases, etc. and factors considered in their design/construction. Factors affecting the stability and durability of furniture and structures. Stages of the furniture and construction production process (drying, steaming, mechanical treatment, planing, grinding, adhesion, assembly, application of coatings, paints, etc.). Application of new technologies in the design and manufacture of furniture and woodwork. Quality control methods for furniture and structures (cyclic loading control). Methods of checking individual connections of timber members. Standardization and certification of constructions and furniture. Production and marketing of furniture and structures in our country. Risks arising during the use of structures - furniture. Furniture based on the needs of different age groups (children, elderly, etc.). Recycling of wooden constructions - furniture beyond their use/service life, wood, metal recovery procedures, etc.
