Learning Outcomes
•To understand the concepts of water resources, water potential, conventional and non-conventional water resources • To understand the basic principles of sustainable management of water resources. • To understand the interaction of surface and groundwater • To estimate the water needs in an area • To combine theory with practice. • To be able to organize a survey on water resources management at the river basin scale • To be able to draw up a groundwater balance and estimate the reserves of an aquifer. • To be able to organize an artificial recharge experiment. • To understand the phenomenon of salinization in coastal aquifers. • To propose ways to exploit surface and spring waters.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Water potential of Greece- Groundwater Reserves in Greece. Estimation of water needs at a river basin scale. Coastal aquifer systems and seawater intrusion. Artificial recharge of aquifers. Governance-Management and sustainable development of Water Resources. Research and Identification of Aquifers. Water and Energy. No conventional water resources. Circular economy and water. Economic elements in water exploitation. Climate crisis and impacts on water resources. Institutional framework - Management Plans. Transboundary waters. Water resources management models. SWOT and DPSIR analyses.

Written final examination with a combination of questions and solving problems related to laboratory exercises. Oral examination for students with learning disabilities. Intermediate written examination.
