Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and classify various types of wood, both European and tropical, based on their physical and mechanical properties.**
2. Understand the significance of the studied wood species at both local and international levels.**
3. Apply knowledge of wood properties to select appropriate materials for industrial and construction applications.**
4. Design strategies for the rational management and utilization of forestry species, contributing to the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.**
5. Analyze and solve practical problems related to the selection and use of wood in different environments, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions in their field.**
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course "European and Tropical Woods" focuses on acquiring specialized knowledge about the various types of wood used in many and different applications and uses. Students will be taught to recognize and evaluate wood species, focusing on their quality, behavior during growth and processing, as well as their physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Through the course, students will develop the ability to select the appropriate wood for specific uses, considering factors such as durability, processing, long-term wood behavior, and various climatic and environmental conditions. The knowledge they will acquire will be particularly useful in understanding the importance of the rational management and utilization of different forestry species, both European and tropical. A deep understanding of the characteristics of wood is an essential tool for effectively selecting the appropriate material in the diverse applications of forestry and the wood industry. This course offers critical knowledge and experience, which are prerequisites for the successful utilization of forest resources, thereby enhancing students' ability to make informed decisions in their professional careers.
Description
At the beginning of the semester, a series of mandatory introductory lectures is conducted. Following this, students are offered the following options for assessment:
a) Writing a research paper based on data collection, with a presentation at the end of the semester
b) Writing a literature review paper, also with a presentation at the end of the semester
c) Participation in a written or oral exam with open-ended questions.
Choosing the examination option (written or oral) does not entail a reduced workload. Students who select this form of assessment are required to actively participate in the semester’s teaching activities (e.g., exercises, additional lectures), in order to ensure equivalence in learning outcomes compared to options (a) and (b).
