Learning Outcomes
With the successful completion of the course, students will have acquired the following knowledge, abilities, or skills: 1. Knowledge of forest work conditions in Greek and Foreign Forestry. 2. Ability to select appropriate protective equipment. 3. Ability to select appropriate wood harvesting equipment. 4. Ability to design safety measures for forest work. 5. Ability to calculate productivity and labor costs. 6. Minimization of environmental impacts during forest operations.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Preparation of the harvest: Forest management plan, transport network, equipment, personnel, buildings, harvesting season. Work methods. Harvesting plan. 2. Wood harvesting tools: Axes, saws (hand saws), wedges, hooks, log rotators, hammers, forest tape measures. Chainsaw. Peelers. Harvesting machines (harvester, forwarder, skidder). Draft and load animals. 3. Harvesting tasks: Felling. Felling direction and technique. Tree processing: debranching, bucking, measuring and debarking logs. Spliting firewood. Wood extraction. Logyards. Management of logging residues. 4. Forestry workforce: Forestry work. Training of forest workers. Accidents. Practical measures in the forest. Personal Protective Equipment (parts and use). 5. Mechanization of forest operations: Advantages and disadvantages. Application of mechanical means especially in Greece. 6. Financial aspects: Harvesting expenses: i) wages of forest workers, ii) expenses for purchasing and using of tools, animals and machinery, iii) administration and management expenses iv) expenses of buildings and forest roads. Cost calculation. Time studies. Time study methods. Selection of forest workers. Data collection sheets. Expenses of employment of tools, animals and machinery. Importance of time studies. Calculation of cost per unit of production. 7. Organization of harvesting operations: Silvicultural targets. Terrain attributes. Forest personnel. Problems of the Greek forest workers. 8. Harvesting of Non-Wood Forest Products: Resin production (harvesting methods, consequences of resin production, factors affecting tree growth). Christmas trees (production, cultivation). The importance of NWFPs at the local and global level.

Description
The course is examined in writing (or orally when the appropriate conditions are met) with descriptive and multiple choice questions (80%) The remaining 20% of the grade comes from their grade in the laboratory exercises. Students are also given the opportunity to prepare and present a project on a topic related to the course.
