Learning Outcomes
It is expected that students who take this course will acquire a working understanding of:
a) the relations between the ethnographic and comparative aspects of anthropological praxis
b) the aims, principles, means and methods of ethnographic research and, more specifically, of participant observation
c) the conceptual and methodological diversity of the ethnographic perspective
d) the arguments of the reflexive critique concerning the moral and political dimensions of fieldwork and the textual practices deployed in the representation of alterity
e) the approach of historical ethnography and its contribution to the study of the past and the values and meanings
attached to memory in different social and cultural contexts
f) the major preoccupations and methodological tendencies of Greek ethnography

Course Content (Syllabus)
Ethnographic research involving participant observation emblematizes the longstanding constitutive commitment of the discipline of social / cultural anthropology to the understanding and describing of social relations and cultural practices from the actors’ point of view. The course begins with a review of the complex and shifting relations between the ethnographic and the cross-cultural or comparative aspect of anthropological praxis and proceeds with a discussion concerning the points of divergence between major anthropological schools or traditions with respect to the research questions posed, the theoretical underpinnings of these questions and the debates fuelled by data which their investigation generated. The next part of the course focuses on the reflexive critiques of the late twentieth century and, more specifically on debates concerning the extent to which conventional ethnographic practices contribute to the reification of cultural difference. These critiques provided the background for the emergence of innovations that are now standard practice. Next, we turn to an extensive review of the fields of historical ethnography and oral history. The course ends with an overview of the issues that have constituted the central foci of Greek ethnography and of the methodological approaches through which they have been investigated.

Description
Weekly study of english and greek bibliography and brief oral and /or written critical reviews of selected texts. Design and completion of a small scale ethnographic project. Final term paper.
