Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, students will:
- recognize the manuscript tradition and Psaltic collections.
- know the liturgical books
-use elements from the historical development of church music in order to describe the concept of Kalophonia and Beautification.
-organize the structure of the Byzantine Liturgy based on the terminology
- chant the Prologues- Automela
-memorize the notation of the Psaltic Art and practice on musical examples.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The students will gain basic knowledge of the Psaltic art of the Orthodox Church regarding history, morphology, creations from great composers, manuscript and printed tradition of compositions, evolution of notation. At the same time, in each unit they will practice on today’s music notation, music genres, scales etc.
1. Introductory historical and technical data. The theological dimension of chanting. First contact with notation.
2. Manuscript tradition, repertoire data, Basic Psaltic collections. Music signs, diatonic genre.
3. Composers and compositions of the Byzantine era. Solmization exercises.
4. Constantinople and the Ecumenical Patriarchate as a timeless center for the development of Psaltic art. Solmization exercises, music signs.
5. The Psaltic tradition of Mount Athos. Composers and compositions, morphology and influences. Solmization exercises.
6. The transition between the Byzantine and post-Byzantine eras. The last masters, manuscript Psaltic collections. Solmization and melody exercises.
7. The Psaltic art in Crete and other regional centers. The Aegean Sea and artistic creation. Diatonic genre.
8. Data of the chronological evolution of notation. Theoretical collections. Exercises on music of the Anastasimatarion.
9. The post-Byzantine Psaltic art of the 17th century. Psaltic collections, composers and their activities.
10. The Psaltic art of the 18th century. Great composers, Music books, the phenomenon of interpretations.
11. The Psaltic art of the 19th century. The New Method (theory and practice), its contributors and their action. The beginning of music typography and its evolution. Chromatic genre.
12. Logos and Melody: the parallel of Psaltic expression.
13. The today’s musicological research in the field of Psaltic art.
