Course Content (Syllabus)
The course presents individual aspects of the monastic theology and spirituality of Mount Athos from its early communal history to the present day, through the thorough study and examination of the relevant sources, the monastic libraries and the spiritual movements that appeared on Mount Athos during its more than a millennial historical course. 1. Forms of monastic life in Byzantine Athos. Their theological and spiritual context 2. The salvation of the "whole" man in the monastic tradition 3. Mount Athos as a "communion of deification" 4. The hagiographic production in Mount Athos during the Middle and Late Byzantine period 5. The Byzantine Hesychasm and Hesychastic life on Mount Athos 6. Spiritual and theological ferment on Mount Athos during the first centuries of Ottoman rule 7. "Logos from Mount Athos". A public Lecture by an Athonite Abbot or Elder given in the context of the academic events of the present MSc 8. The Philokalic Renaissance and the theological disputes on Mount Athos during the 18th and 19th centuries (On sacred funerary services and frequent divine communion) 9. The Athonite Encyclopaedism (Athonite scholars and the relevant works) 10. The theological teachings of the Athonite Elders between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries 11. Mount Athos and its pastoral contribution to the spiritual work of the Orthodox Church during the twentieth century 12. Spiritual mutual concessions - pilgrimage tourism on Mount Athos 13. Presentation and examination of postgraduate students' work
