Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Αnalyze individual aspects of the spiritual function of Mount Athos Metochia
- Understand the spiritual processes in which the dominant Mount Athos monasteries participated
- Know and present the gradual development of the Metochia of Mount Athos monasteries from the 10th century until present day
- Understand the relationship of the Orthodox Church with the natural environment and the role of Mount Athos, as a World Cultural as well as Natural Heritage Site

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course presents first of all the physical geography and the natural environment of Mount Athos, as well as the development of the image of the sacred Athos as an ideal spiritual space. Then the gradual development of the metochia and other possessions of the Athonite monasteries inside and outside Athos, especially in Greece, Asia Minor and the wider Balkan and European area, from the 10th century until today, is presented.
Particular emphasis is given to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, up to the period of the late Turkish occupation, but also to the more recent and modern situation of the Athonite metochion and other possessions up to our days. Finally, the spiritual function of the Athonite Metochion is presented, in connection with the spiritual processes in which the dominant Athonite monasteries or distinguished forms of Athonite scholars actively participated at times.

8. The possessions of the Mount Athos Monasteries outside Mount Athos (in Greece, Asia Minor and the Orthodox countries)
