Course Content (Syllabus)
a) Introduction to Electrochemical Energy Systems: Basic principles and thermodynamic consideration of galvanic cells, electrochemical energy conversion, electrochemical technologies and energy storage reactors.
b) Batteries: Principle of operation of batteries, electrodes and characterization of batteries, characteristics of batteries, types of batteries, components (separator, electrodes, active components, collectors, electrolytes), primary batteries, secondary batteries (rechargeable), lithium batteries, redox flow batteries, applications.
c) Fuel cells: Basic principles of operation, fuel cell thermodynamics, electrode kinetics, charge transfer processes and mass transfer phenomena in fuel cells, fuel cell types, electrochemical characterization of fuel cells, fuel cell systems, electrolysis systems, regenerative fuel cells.
d) Electrochemical capacitors: electrochemical double layer, capacitors with carbon electrodes, pseudo-capacitor materials and devices, hybrid (asymmetric) supercapacitors, characterization and diagnostic tools for electrochemical supercapacitors, applications.
e) Laboratory practice: Development of materials and devices for PEM and SOC fuel cells and electrolysis. Electrochemical characterization of fuel cells and electrolysis devices. Electrochemical characterization of lithium-ion batteries.
