Course Content (Syllabus)
a)Basic characteristics of electrochemical applications: electrode types; cell types; reactor types. Figures of merit.
b)Electrosynthetic processes: chlor-alkali industry; adiponitrile production; conducting polymers.
c)Electrochemistry of metals: electroplating; electrochemical machining; corrosion-metal protection.
d) Corrosion of metals (thermodynamic and kinetic approach) - anodization of metals and formation of surface oxides - corrosion protection of metals.
e) Electrochemical environmental remediation techniques: brief overview of the electrochemical treatment of liquid effluents (metal ion deposition, organics oxidation, electrodialysis); electrochemical reduction and reclaim of heavy, toxic and precious metals (direct cathodic deposition, electrodialysis, electrocoagulation); electrochemical oxidation of pollutants.
f) Electrochemical Detectors and Sensors: General overview of electrochemical detectors and sensors. Microelectrode sensors. Ion Selective Electrodes (ISEs). Electrochemical gas sensors.
g) Electrochemical detection in flow systemσ: high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and flow injection analysis.
h) Demonstration of experiments: Synthesis of conductive polymers. Electrodeposition/plating. Corrosion of metals.
i) Applications of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in understanding the mechanism and kinetics of electrolysis, passivation and protection of metals.
