Learning Outcomes
The course analyzes the basic physical characteristics of sound and how they are perceived by the human ear and brain. Practical application in sound recording software (Audacity). Familiarization with the 'visualization' of sound. Practical applications of mp3. Perception of rhythm, duration, pitch, vowels, consonants, words, phrases/sentences, prosody. Practical training in voice and sound recording, realizing the continuous presence of multiple auditory stimuli in everyday life. Presentation of tests for auditory processing (with verbal and non-verbal stimuli) standardized in the Psychoacoustics Laboratory (Neuroscience Department, AUTh) for the Greek population. Students completing the course successfully will be able to understand the basic principles of creating tests for the diagnostic assessment of Auditory Processing Disorder, and the need for adaptation of the examination for individuals with diagnoses on the autism spectrum, schizophrenia, and individuals with learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia). Grading Progress (20%) Assignments (40%) Final written exam (40%) Recommended Textbooks Notes from course presentations and published papers from the Psychoacoustics Laboratory, Department of Neurosciences, AUTH.
