Learning Outcomes
The main objectives of the course are the synthetic approach and understanding of the main historical developments in the Balkan peninsula and Eastern Mediterranean world from the 6th to the 11th c. A.D., the familiarization with the gradual transformation of the Roman Empire of Late Antiquity to the medieval Byzantine Empire. The purpose of tutoring is also the methodological approach and analysis of the most important sources of the era and the performance of students in the use and interpretation of relevant sources.

Course Content (Syllabus)
A survey of the most important political and military events during the middle byzantine period, that is from the death of the emperor Justinian I (a. 565) until the rise of the Comnenian dynasty to the throne(a. 1081). Presentation of the general developments that led gradually from the Later Roman Eastern Empire of the 4th-6th c. to the “hellenized” state of the middle byzantine period. State administration - internal and external developments. Methodological approach and analysis of the primary sources of the era.
