Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, the students are expected to become familiar with the scientific terms and the main bibliography of this field of research, both through the reference works and through new approaches, interpretations and archaeological data. Students will be able to recall important Greek sanctuaries and the associated festivals, and to associate important cult places with the cult of specific gods, as well as discussing particular founding myths with the historical, political and cultural environment of each period. Students will be able to discuss the main stages of ancient Greek religious festivals and rerated ritual activities.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The purpose of the course is the study of the cult-practices in the ancient Greek sanctuaries (gods and their functions, cult-buildings, priesthood, festivals, sacrifices to the gods and other rituals, votives etc.)
Week #1 Religous festivals and rituals of the Early Iron Age
Week #2 The sanctuaries of the Cyclades: the worshipped gods, votive offerings and religious festivals
Week #3 The religious festivals in Athens and Attica
Week #4 The peri-urban sanctuaries of Attica - Artemis, Hephaestus, Theseus and the cult of heroes
Week #5 Chthonic cults and Eleusinian Mysteries
Week#6 The Cult of Zeus - Hermes, Dionysus - Tree Cult
Week #7 Panhellenic festivals and athletic games: Zeus, Apollo, Poseidon
Week #8 The cult of Hera in the Aegean and Mediterranean
