Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of gender and racial discrimination, focusing on te labor market (especially employment and earnings). More precisely, this course discusses economic theories and empirical methods that explain discrimination. Syllabus: discrimination and nepotism. Employer Discrimination Employee Discrimination Client Discrimination Statistical Discrimination Compensating Wage Differentials Monopsony Power Impact of Discrimination in the Labor Market: Occupational Segregation and Wage Differences. Empirical assessment of discrimination: the methodology of Blinder and Oaxaca and its variants, corrections for self-selection bias. Affirmative action to promote equality, anti-discrimination legislation.
