| Description | IGEM Thessaloniki, an interdisciplinary research team in synthetic biology, represented the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the global student competition in Synthetic Biology iGEM 2021, and was one of the gold medal-winning teams. 10 undergraduate students, originating from the Schools of Pharmacy, Biology, Informatics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and 1 postgraduate student of the School of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, organized and designed an early diagnostic tool for pancreatic cancer using synthetic biology methods. The project called METIS (MiRNA Expression Toehold Investigation System) has a strong interdisciplinary character with a high degree of innovation, as it aims at an easy-to-use and inexpensive tool for detecting microRNAs in the urine of patients with stage I and II pancreatic cancer.
In addition, the team won in the innovation competition organized by "Alexander Innovation Zone" the 1st innovation award at the level of idea for the METIS project (September 2021). |
