To obtain the Postgraduate Diploma of Specialisation, during the 1st and 2nd semesters students are required to attend and undergo a successful examination in six (6) semester-long postgraduate seminars, three (3) per semester, with a total of sixty (60) ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) units. The dissertation is credited with 40 ECTS units. Its research and writing take place during the 3rd and 4th semesters with the aid of two (2) additional courses on the methodology of researching, synthesising and writing up a dissertation, corresponding to twenty (20) ECTS units.
From the total of eighty (80) ECTS units, sixty (60) must be selected from the list of courses determined each time by the Specialisation for which the student has registered. The remaining ECTS units may be selected from other Specialisations of the SchoolPostgraduate Degree Programme or from Postgraduate Degree Programmes run by the Universityother Schools.
The Postgraduate Degree Programme of the School of History and Archaeology aims to provide specialised and in-depth training for historians and archaeologists; offer professional training in specific subfields of the disciplines of History and Archaeology; advance new technologies in researching and studying the Humanities; promote interdisciplinary approaches; link the study of discipline subfields to the natural and man-made environments in their historical perspectives; and to equip graduates with expertise in the applications of the disciplines in the domain of modern society. The Programme aims at learning results and skills that enable graduates to carry out specialised research in the disciplines of History and Archaeology and provide expert services in the fields of Education, the Discovery and Preservation of Monuments and Cultural Heritage Management.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Degree Programme of the School of History and Archaeology are equipped with the necessary knowledge to:
- design and carry out responsibly original scholarly research
- advance to the critical evaluation and use of knowledge and of diverse methodological and theoretical approaches
- search effectively for bibliographies and other sources in libraries, archives and on the internet and present the findings of their research
- generate novel research ideas and design, manage and carry through research projects
Graduates of the SchoolPostgraduate Degree Programme acquire the following skills:
- to submit applications for research programmes with all the parameters (including statements of research methods and operations and anticipation of potential pitfalls and barriers)
- to present the findings of their research orally and in writing to diverse audiences in the manner suitable to each particular occasion
- to make effective and productive use of new technologies
- to provide specialised services on matters relating to archiving and organizing archives and collections on an international, national and local level
- to carry out ethnographic, folklore, historical and archaeological (surface and excavation) field research
- to take on the role of expert in a variety of public sector departments and services
In addition to their specialised knowledge in the disciplines of History and Archaeology, graduates of the SchoolPostgraduate Degree Programme are able to:
- put theoretical knowledge to practical use

- solve complex problems arising in the course of their work/research, in each particular case making use of new and/or interdisciplinary approaches and knowledge from other fields
