Πτυχίο Γεωλογίας (Ptychio Geologias) ( Degree in Geology)
Undergraduate
Upper secondary degree (6 years of studies). National level examination.
The undergraduate Programme of Studies of the School of Geology aims at educating scientists which are qualified to study and understand phenomena and processes in the geosphere, hydropshere, and atmosphere, as well as their relation with the anthopogenic and natural environment during the Geological time. The School of Geology provides to all its graduates the fundamental knowledge and competencies for the effective practice of the profession of Geologist. Moreover, it offers to its students the opportunity to further enrich their knowledge in one of the seven (7) compulsory directions. These directions are not strictly distinguished, as they share several common courses, while at the same time the students have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge with further optional courses from different directions. The compulsory directions of studies are: 1) Structural Geology - Stratigraphy, 2) Applied Geology, 3) Mineralogy-Petrology, 4) Ore Deposits-Economic Geology, 5) Geophysics, 6) Meteorology and Climatology and, 7) Environmental Geography. For a successful completion of the Bachelordegree, the student must accumulate a minimum of 240 ECTS credits within the period of studies, which are classified as following: From compulsory courses 173-181 ECTS and from optional courses 59-67 ECTS. The programme of studies includes compulsory laboratory and tutorial coursework, as well as field work. The studentsield training involves compulsory geological mapping, and during each semester several compulsory field trips linked with the corresponding courses, as well as optional field trips which typical last several days. At the end of his/her studies the student is required to submit a dissertation thesis, which is equivalent to 8-16 ECTS. Moreover, students have the option to select a Practical Training in professional private or public organizations, under the supervision of the Geology Department professors, from which they receive 4 ECTS. Moreover, students have the option to attend a Practical Educational Training in private or public schools of the secondary education, under the supervision of a secondary education teacher and the co-supervision of the Geology Department professors, from which they receive 4 ECTS. For each direction, there is a directory of optional courses, which are interrelated regarding their topics. From these courses, the student is obliged to succeed in those accumulating a minimum of 42 ECTS. Moreover, they have the option to select, register and be examined in courses that provide additional ECTS, either from the same direction or a different one, according to the studentpersonal choice. Moreover, the student can register for two optional courses from other schools. The school of Geology graduates have acquired skills in the practical application of laboratory research methods for the study of the rocks, ore deposits, fossils (polarizing microscope - metallographic microscope, grain size analysis, fossil identification), soil mechanics-rock mechanics tests, analysis and processing of geological, meteorological data and maps through appropriate software and field work (geological mapping, geophysical investigation, hydrogeological-engineering geological measurements, meteorological and climatological analysis, etc.). The graduate students of the School of Geology have acquired the fundamental and specialized knowledge, as well as the corresponding skills, regarding the application of several theoretical, experimental and laboratory research methods in the main sectors of economy, development and sustainable environmental management (mineral resources, technical infrastructure construction, land use, water resource management, etc.) and more specifically the employment of field research tools that concern the following research and application topics:·Compilation of geological studies and reports, such as geomorphological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, mineralogical, petrological, economic geology, geochemical, tectonic/stratigraphic/neotectonic/seismotectonic, geophysical, palaeogeographical, soil, photogeological, and environmental studies (e.g. for civil or industrial environments), as well as composition of the corresponding application maps using GIS tools and specialized exploration techniques (geophysical, geotechnical, geochemical, radiometric, etc.) .·Realization of geological and geotechnical studies for infrastructure and civil or urban development constructions (e.g. determination of mechanical properties of geomaterials and interpretation of geological models) using laboratory and in-situ methods, such as soils and rock mechanics tests, geophysical explorations and remote sensing techniques. ·Exploration, mapping, management and exploitation of mineral, water and energy resources (including mineral and non-mineral deposits, construction aggregates and gemstones), as well as mineral geology studies.·Programming, execution, supervision and evaluation of exploration data from sampling boreholes and related field data for geological, mineralogical, hydrogeological, economic geology, geotechnical and geothermal purposes, as well as for hydrocarbon exploration, including underwater geological investigations.·Natural hazard assessment and risk-management design studies for related phenomena (e.g. earthquakes, avalanches, collapses, subsidence, volcanoes, flooding, extreme weather hazards, etc.), as well as applied studies for the protection, exploitation, restoration, and preservation of the natural environment (e.g. geological monuments, palaeontological heritage, geoparks, geotopes, caves, etc.).·Meteorological measurements and assessments for weather analysis and forecast based on the acquisition of specialized knowledge in topics of fundamental, theoretical and applied Meteorology, as well as climatological assessments and acquisition of specialized knowledge for the in-depth understanding of climate change issues. Therefore, the graduates of the school of Geology can exercise the profession of Geologist in different branches and specializations, as they have been already previously described, working in production and management financial sectors, infrastructure work and sustainable development projects. Moreover, they can teach topics belonging to the subject fields of Geology, Geography and Environmental Sciences in Middle and Higher Education institutes, as well as provide educational services to public administration, local government authorities of all levels, peripheral development organizations, as well as quality control organizations for water, mineral and energy resources.

8 SEMESTERS, 240 ECTS.
A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B). Each course is credited with a number of ECTS (>=2) according to the studentworkload (contact hours, laboratory work, examination etc) and accumulation of credits (ECTS) is accomplished after successful completion of the course.
