<p>The postgraduate program admits graduates of the Departments of Geology and Biology of the School of Sciences from Greek Universities as well as from equivalent foreign University Departments and Institutes, which are recognized by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center (DOATAP). Also the program admits graduates from other University Departments with specialities relevant to the content of the postgraduate program </p>
<p>Interinstitutional Postgraduate Study Program (I.P.S.P.) Palaeontology-Geobiology is a common postgraduate course, running by the following five Academic Institutions:</p><p>-SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY -ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI, as the coordinating Institution, in collaboration with:</p><p>-SCHOOL OF BIOLOGY -ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI</p><p>-DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY AND GEOENVIRONMENT -NATIONAL & KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS,</p><p>-DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF PATRAS</p><p>and DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY, UNIVERSITY OF AEGEAN</p><p>Lectures are given in the coordinating Institution as well in the School of Geology and Geoenvironment of the NKU Athens.</p><p>The aim of the Interinstitutional Postgraduate Study Program (I.P.S.P.) is:</p><p>-To train the students to develop skills and abilities in order to fulfill the requirements of geosciences in the field of Palaeontology (including macroevolution, phylogeny, paleoecology, oil exploration, geobiology and geo-heritage preservation)</p><p>-Το provide the necessary specialized geo-scientific knowledge that is linked with the discovery, study and interpretation of fossils, the application of palaeontological data on issues of evolution, taphonomy, stratigraphy, biochronology, paleoecology, palaeoclimatology, paleogeography, and their educational promotion through the concepts of geo-preservation and geological heritage.</p><p>- To present modern methods, techniques and practices in excavation / collection - sampling / sorting, maintenance, research and study of fossils.</p><p>-To develop the application of gained skills in teaching, fieldwork and palaeontological excavations, laboratory, and research, as well in providing educational programs to third parties.</p><p>-Το promote multidisciplinary collaboration and synergy between geo-and bio-scientists with the aim of holistic approach to fossils.</p><p>- To improve students΄ skills in communication (oral and written), teamwork and autonomous work, management and promotion of geo-biodiversity.</p><p>The Interinstitutional Program of Postgraduate Studies awards a Master’s Degree in the field of “Palαeontology-Geobiology” with specializations in “Macropaeleontology” and “Micropaeleontology-Biostratigraphy.” To earn the M.S. in “Paleontology-Geobiology,” students must complete 3 semesters, corresponding to a total of 90 ECTS credits. During the first two semesters, graduate students take and are examined on courses corresponding to 60 ECTS credits. In the third semester, students complete a research-based Master’s Thesis worth thirty (30) ECTS credits.</p><p>Graduates can perform autonomous research work or provide substantial support to research teams, as well as staffing public and private bodies by contributing to basic and applied palaeontology and stratigraphic research, oil exploration, and the management, promotion and exploitation of geo-biodiversity through the developing network of geotope-geological parks and alternative forms of tourism.</p><p>Specifically, graduates of the Master’s Program in “Palαeontology-Geobiology” are able: </p><p>-to assess the basic geological context of fossil-bearing deposits, </p><p>-to delve into both fundamental and specialized topics in Paleontology-Geobiology, using the relevant literature, </p><p>-to perform specific laboratory techniques/practices and operate related instruments, </p><p>-to participate in research activities (paleontological excavations, field sampling, laboratory analyses), </p><p>- to collect, process, and analyze paleontological data, </p><p>-to use specialized software,</p><p>-to select and apply the appropriate statistical methods,</p><p>-to observe, describe, and classify fossil organisms, </p><p>-to assess geodiversity and protect and preserve geological heritage,</p><p>- to compile data for the purpose of writing and presenting a scientific study, </p><p>-to use the results of their research to investigate broader issues,</p><p>-to integrate into interdisciplinary and international research/work environments through their participation in exchange programs, </p><p>-to conduct independent research or contribute substantially within research teams, possessing all the necessary skills for successful academic advancement at the doctoral level, or professional advancement in relevant public and private institutions.</p>

<p>3 SEMESTERS, 90 ECTS </p><p>A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1ECTS=25-30 student work load hours). Compliance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) regulations started in 2007, when the Greek Legislation was harmonized with the relevant European one (Ministerial Decision no Φ5/89656/β3, art. 1-3, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1466/2007/B). Each course is credited with a number of ECTS (>=2) according to the student΄s workload (contact hours, laboratory work, examination etc) and accumulation of credits (ECTS) is accomplished after successful completion of the course. </p>
