Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of the course, students will:
- be aware of the basic goals and functions of the welfare state in Europe
- aquire a comprehensive picture of the social, ecoonomic and political context in which the welfare state functions, as well as of the challenges this context poses in the function
- be able to specify and explain the main differences between the welfare regimes in Europe
- to aquire the required knowledge so as to follow and explain the developments in the field of social policy in Europe

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course approaches the Welfare State in Europe from the perspective of Political Science.
It begins with an historical overview, bringing to the fore the differences between the classical model of the Welfare State and its present-day manifestations in the age of globalization.
It then proceeds to examine in detail the role that contemporary social policies (especially those concerning labour relations, gender equality, health care, family care, etc.) play in today’s Welfare State in Europe.
Finally, by providing relevant examples from European countries, the course introduces an array of typologies and cross-national comparisons, thereby providing a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.
