Learning Outcomes
This course aims Α) to give students information about the general characteristics of the major legal systems and Β) to familiarize them with the methodological problems and the methodological tools of comparative law. The particular learning objectives of the course are: (1) Providing knowledge that will allow students to find easily the foreign law, to study foreign legal concepts and legal institutions and to compare them. (2) Approaching theoretical problems of comparative legal research, such as, classification and comparability of laws, evaluation of foreign legal solutions, legal borrowing and legal transplants. (3) Understanding the usefulness of comparative legal research in the various areas of positive law and legal science and engaging in exploratory activities that will allow them to apply the comparative legal method and to discover its usefulness.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course consists of three parts:
The first part includes introductory lessons on the principles of the comparative method, the nature and the practical scope of comparative law and, more specifically, its role in the enactment and implementation of rules of law on the national, international and European Union level.
The second part offers an examination of the general features of the major legal families, specifically the Roman-Germanic family on the one hand and the Anglo-American on the other. It will provide a thorough introduction to American law, as well as a presentation of the basic principles of Islamic law and its relationship with the Greek legal system.
In the third part, we shall attempt a comparative examination of the solutions provided by American, English, German and French law to specific legal issues and, more specifically, to the problem of redressing pure economic loss.

Student Assessment
Description
The process of evaluation between the students who follow the lectures and those who do not, is organized according to the following categories. A. STUDENTS WHO FOLLOW THE WEEKLY LECTURES: (1)Writing skills & scientific paper: Students, either in groups or individually prepare a written essay on topics related to the course. The grade of the essay constitutes the 40% of the final grade. (2) Oral presentation of the essay at the end of the semester. The grade of the oral presentation constitutes the other 20% of the final grade. (3) Final exams: students participate in the final exams which are based on the content of the course. The grade of the final exams constitutes the 40% of the final grade. * Students with an excellent paper (more than 8,5) are exempted from the exams. B. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THE WEEKLY LECTURES: students who do not follow the weekly lectures can only participate in the final written exams. Therefore their final grade is their evaluation on the written exams.
