Learning Outcomes
Students acquire basic theoritical and historical knowledge on city planning and development issues. The course is an introduction to the urban phenomenon and the evolution of the cities and provides an understanding of the emergence and the evolution of town planning. The course examines the concepts, the theoretical approaches, the models and policies, the mechanisms and procedures for the formation and design of the urban space before and after the emergence of town planning as a distinct scientific discipline.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course includes the following thematic areas: 1.City and planning: basic elements. 2.Evolution of the urban phenomenon: from the walled to endless city. 3.Evolution and transformations of the European cities from the middle ages to enlightenment (10th-18th c.). 4.Industrial city and the emergence of contemporary town planning. 5.Formation of town planning as a modern discipline: Theoretical approaches and applications (1870-1940). 6.Post war urban development and planning: The evolution of contemporary urban planning. 7.Evolution of the modern-Greek city and town planning in Greece: From the 19th century to mid-war period and from the post-war period up to the 1980s planning reform. 8.Urban development and planning in the last 30 years: recent changes in urban planning and policy.

Description
Power Point is used for the lectures. All lectures are accessible through Blackboard. Furthermore blackboard is used for uploading all data (text, legislative framework, maps) necessary for conducting the projects. Finally there is an extensive use of Blackboard for corresponding purposes with students (email, announcements etc).
