Learning Outcomes
Students should know the development of Byzantine pottery from the 5th to the 15th century. Have to understanding the techniques and the production process of pottery, the methods of study its typology, the mechanism of distribution as well as the analytical methods. Finally they be able to assess the importance of the study of a site under study. At the same time, students should be familiar with the research and writing of a scientific paper.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course teaches the development of Byzantine pottery from the 5th to the 15th century.During the seminars techniques and pottery production process are presented as well as the study methods of typology, the mechanism of distribution, the analytical methods that help us to study the byzantine pottery. Finally, the pottery's importance to the study of a site during the period under study. Then, in successive courses, students are required to present the process of their work. Week #1 Introduction: Sources-aids on byzantine pottery. Presentation of the aims and objectives of the course. Week #2 Pottery manufacturing techniques during the Middle Ages in Byzantium and the neighboring peoples (Europe, Islam, Mesopotamia, China). The technique of glazing. Papers titles. Week #3 The first glazed wares in Constantinople during the 7th century. The glazed pottery of 8th and 9th centuries. Production, typology, distribution. Week #4 The glazed wares from 10th to 12th century. Production, typology, distribution. The students present the preliminary results of their research on the topic undertaken. Take part in the discussion the professor as well as the other students, who have already been informed about the work of their colleague. Corrective observations. Week #5 The glazed wares from 12th to 15th century. Production, typology, distribution. Week #6 The students present the progress of their research. Week #7 Visit to the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Study of byzantine pottery. Week #8 Amphorae of early byzantine period. Production, typology, distribution, agricultural products. Week #9 The students present the progress of their research. remarks and discussion on each topic. Week #10 Amphorae of middle byzantine period. Production, typology, distribution, agricultural products. Week #11 Amphorae of late byzantine period. Production, typology, distribution, agricultural products. The analytical methods for the study of pottery. Week #12 Visit to a traditional pottery production center. Week #13 The students present their final work. Remarks, general conclusions.
