Learning Outcomes
Aim
In depth student familiarization with the theory of art.
Sessions are conducted in seminar form ( following up issues rather than surveying) so students have to put in a considerable amount of work in preparation for the seminar to go on. Each session is divided into a cognitive (A in the syllabus) and practice (B in the syllabus) part. Ιn the former they are instructed into meeting the demands of scholarly research and trained to tackle the necessary concepts of authoring a scholarly text. In the latter they are instructed into “anatomizing” a set theoretical text so as to understand the issues raised by the field of study submitting weekly essays of c.1000 words on the set books. Finally they submit their c. 6000 word term essay based on Reception Theory.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Methods of approach
Practice by stages.. Discussion of books/essays in class and individual research in archives and Art Museums in order to formulate and author a scholarly text (their term paper of c. 6000 words) based on the theory of reception, as that is the most widely applied tool in art history and theory currently.
