Learning Outcomes
All three genres show how multilayer and multiform the themes, motifs and aesthetic stylistic devices of Expressionism (approx. 1910 - 1925) – the second generation of literary Modernism - are. In this seminar, the following texts will be examined: Gottfried Benn Rönne-Novellen (Gehirne (1914), Die Eroberung (1915)), Alfred Döblin Die Ermordung einer Butterblume (1910), Georg Heym Der Dieb. Ein Novellenbuch (1913) (Der fünfte Oktober (1911), Der Irre (1911)), Franz Kafka Das Urteil (1913), Die Verwandlung (1912), Ein Bericht für eine Akademie (1917), Alfred Döblin Die drei Sprünge des Wang-lun. Chinesischer Roman (1915), Berlin Alexanderplatz
(1929), Georg Kaiser Von morgens bis mitternachts (1916), Georg Kaiser: Gas (1917/18), Gas. Zweiter Teil (1918/19), Kurt Pinthus (1920): Menschheitsdämmerung – Ein Dokument des Expressionismus.
Students learn (1) how to cooperate and participate regularly and actively, (2) how to present a literary subject orally and (3) how to write a written test. This way they become acquainted with (1) multiple methods of text analysis and interpretation, (2) the scientific handling of bibliography/ secondary literature and (3) their own production of scientific texts. The language of the course is german, which additionally helps the students improve their language competence.
