Course Content (Syllabus)
No other Hegelian text has probably been read so often and in so many different ways and perspectives as the introduction to his lectures on the Philosophy of History. Hegel tries here to establish a philosophical view of world history, which differs from the usual approaches of the historians - but continues to pursue its legitimacy through the historical material. The purpose of this philosophical approach is to clarify the meaning of history, which thus appears as a gradual "progress in the consciousness of freedom". The driving force behind this progress is the idea of (political) freedom, to the realization of which progresses the whole world history. – Through a close reading of the "Introduction" we will try to capture the status and legitimacy of the concept of a philosophical history. The course is also ideal as a general introduction to Hegel’s philosophy.
