Learning Outcomes
The course aims at understanding the key issues of morphology, anatomy and systematics of invertebrates in relation to the evolution and the phylogenetic relationships in the animal kingdom. Awareness through the knowledge of the diversity of the animal world. The ability of using the optical microscope for the observation and identification of histological sections of representative invertebrate species or whole microscopic organisms. Familiarity with the use of keys for the identification of representative invertebrate species.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Lectures: Animal Diversity and the Science of Zoology. Principles of Systematic Zoology. Protista. General structure (tissues, etc), characters, origin and evolution of animals. External morphology, anatomy, taxonomy and phylogeny of Porifera, Knidozoa, Ctenophora, Platyelminthes, Nematoda, Rotifera, Mollusca, Annelida, Arthropoda and Echinoderma. Laboratory exercises: The use of microscope. Observation of the main groups of Protista. Tissues observation. Anatomy and identification (by the use of keys) of selected species of different phyla like : sponges, Knidozoa, tapeworms, nematodes, annelids, mollusks, arthropods (insects, crustaceans-arachnids-millipedes), echinoderms.

Description
1. Written examination on course material (75% of the final grade). Examination with multiple choice questions and answers on questions of knowledge or judgment. Self-assessment multiple choice tests. 2. Oral and written exam at the end of the laboratory exercises (25% of final grade). This is based on the identification of microscopic and macroscopic preparations, figures of anatomy without indications of the different organs, identification of a species with the use of keys. The quality of the booklet used during each lab exercise is taken into consideration (20%).
