Learning Outcomes
The course aims to familiarise the students with the history of Venetian rule over Greek lands, through a critical study of aspects of the society and culture of the Serenissima's colonial empire in the eastern Mediterranean. Each 3-hour lesson comprises a lecture and a seminar. In the seminar particular issues are discussed within the framework of the central topic presented in the lecture; at the same time, written historical sources are analysed. The lesson is based on the active participation of the students who are urged to write and orally present papers. The course uses the educational platform AUTh eClass (course code: ITL 125).

Course Content (Syllabus)
ISTITUTIONS AND ATTITUDES IN THE VENETIAN STATE: THE FORMATION AND FUNCTION OF A COLONIAL EMPIRE. The course examines the most important chapters of the history and culture of Venice, focusing on tis colonial policy in Greek lands from the time of the conquest of Byzantine lands in 1204 (Partitio Terrarum Imperii Romaniae) up to the abolition of the Venetian Republic by Napoleon (1797). Here is an overview of the particular areas covered:
Historiographic approaches; sources and tools of research. Factors which contributed to the colonial expansion of the Venetians in the eastern Mediterranean. The geographical and chronological limits of the Venetian maritime empire (Stato da Mar). Colonial government, institutions, economic and military organisation; shipping and commerce; social stratification, marginal groups, racial roles, charity, social care; religious, educational and cultural policies; language, art and society; the framework of relations between the dominant and the subjects.

Description
The degree to which each student has met the requirements of the course is assessed by the following means: by his active participation in the class proceedings; by the writing of a paper and presenting and supporting it in class; alternatively, by sitting a two-and-a half-hour long written examination.
