Course Content (Syllabus)
Based on the conceptual and epistemological context of landscape architecture,
introductory notions and meanings are discussed, with references to the beginning of the specific science, and its gradual differentiation from other relative sciences which deal with landscape either on a research level or design.
Emphasis is given on the importance of sustainability in landscape design, the sustainable development of the urban landscape, and the resilient city. The different kind of landscape studies are presented, concerning either landscape assessment, protection or preservation, rehabilitation and recovery, exploitation of degraded and abandoned sites, or design.
Through the critical review of implemented projects or designed proposals from the Greek and international environment, contemporary design trends and approaches are discussed in class, concerning the planning and design of large landscape architecture projects of urban and peri-urban open space.
The goal of the course is the familiarization of students with contemporary issues and notions concerning landscape design, aiming at the arrangement, upgrade, reclamation and planning of the urban, peri-urban or rural open space, as well as with the familiarization with other scientific fields involved in landscape architecture, such as ecology, and their critical role in landscape design.
