Learning Outcomes
• Introduce students to an integrated approach to spatial planning theories, based on the different planning schools developed over the past 50 years.
• Familiarize students with the characteristics of the various spatial planning systems in relation to the prevailing socio-economic context and theoretical interpretations.
• Deepen students’ knowledge on the evolution and current characteristics of the Greek spatial planning system as applied at varying spatial levels (urban, regional and national).
Course Content (Syllabus)
1. The concept, the objectives and the content of spatial planning: theoretical and empirical approaches.
2. The evolution of spatial planning and determining factors
3. The typology of spatial planning systems in Europe
4. Spatial planning systems in Europe and their specification at varying spatial scales (city, region, country, supra national territorial areas)
5. The regulatory and the strategic character of spatial planning
6. Spatial planning and territorial governance
7. The evolution and current characteristics of the Greek spatial planning system: spatial scales, policies, institutions, and contemporary spatial development challenges.
