INDEXICAL REFERENCE AND RELATED PHENOMENA After a critical review of the linguistic literature on indexical reference and related phenomena, the seminar focuses on two main themes of the philosophical literature on the topic: (a) the problem of accounting for the semantic contribution of indexicals in a truth-theoretic semantic framework, and its consequences on the treatment of certain other basic issues in the philosophy of language, and (b) the problem of accounting for the cognitive role of so-called 'essential indexicals', and its relations to certain central issues in the philosophy of mind.
