Course Content (Syllabus)
The purpose of this cycle of activities is to expand the students' practice and definition of painting in the direction of professionalism. Through a series of studio projects, we will look at fundamental issues around 20th and 21st century painting that are emerging with renewed intensity today such as: representation / abstraction, body and self expression, digital / analogue image and most importantly the relationship of painting to its heritage and other expressive means. In the studio, students will be confronted with patterns from other two-dimensional (2-D) three-dimensional (3-D) and four-dimensional (4-D) expressive media, examining the potential of all these, in order to oversee, express and manage the actual physical properties of their material and the painting in general. A final project will serve as a leading professional experience and at the same time launch as a model, the cycle of their diplomatic work.
Students in independent studios are required to attend an additional seminar, the Senior Project, which serves as a critical forum for preparing and supporting their thesis report next year.
It is a seminar to enhance their critical ability, self-presentation and scientific support of their artistic work, using both group discussion and individual guidance as a tool to promote the practical side of their art. Emphasis is placed on the continuous development of the idea for the artistic production of their work that has already begun in the previous period of studies. It requires both the development of the critical reading ability of their works and the written responses posted on a mixed online platform. In addition to studio work, visits to museums and galleries are required.
The Senior Project gives students the opportunity to participate in a continuous and intense development of their artistic practice based on weekly meetings throughout the year with the collaboration of lecturers and theorists with the aim of preparing their documented support of their artwork, as effectively as possible.
