Το get to know the basic Islamic terminology and history of the Middle East and to understand the role of Islam in politics

• To practice participant observation and interviews
• To sensitize on methodological and practical issues that may arise from the involvement of the researcher in the field study
• To practice the analysis and interpretation of qualitative data
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to give students the general principles of history and political implications of Islam in the modern world. How modern Muslim states they understand and express the concepts of theocracy, modernity, pan-Arabism and Islamism. To achieve these objectives we teach the history of Islam from its appearance to the present, we look at the geography and the sectarian splits, i.e.: Islam's main division into Sunnis and Shiis and Ibadis and their subdivisions, we expose the main concept of Islamic law and its application within the Muslim countries and we explore the contemporary policies of Muslim countries in the Middle East. Finally we refer to the Muslims of Europe and particularly the Muslims of Greece , indigenous and immigrants. we will also refer to the events and developments of the so called "arab spring".
