General Prerequisites
The translation of Aristotle's Politics into latin opened new avenues to medieval political thought. Eminent thinkers started publishing erudite treatises in an effort to justify not only monarchy, which was was the most widespread regime of the time, but other forms of government that relied on popular rule.In this context we will systematically study three characteristic works written during the 13th and the 14th century: Aquinas' De regno, Marcilius' of Padua first Discourse of Defensor Pacis, Bartolus' of Saxoferrato De regimine civitatis.
