Learning Outcomes
The course as the first of a five-course cycle on theatre history primarily aims at: a. discussing the developments in world theatre from the beginnings to the Renaissance, and b. introducing students to the research and methodology of theatre history and historiography. Therefore, among the objectives of the course is not only to disseminate knowledge on theatre art as evolved in different countries, cultures and ages but also to provide students with the scientific tools to analyse historical change, cultural practices and artistic creation in order to understand and gradually apply the methods of theatre history as an academic discipline.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This is the first of three subsequent courses exploring the developments in theatre history from ancient times to present. The course initially discusses the origins of theatre and the methodology of theatre historiography. Then it examines the roots of theatrical activity in ancient Egypt and the emergence of theatre in classical Athens. Special attention is given to Roman drama and spectacles, Byzantine mime, Sanskrit plays, Japanese theatre and the religious as well as secular drama of the Middle-Ages. The last period of theatrical activity this course explores, is Renaissance Europe with emphasis on Elizabethan stage. Dramatic texts, visual material and different historiographic approaches will be employed in an attempt to analyse theatre as an art, a cultural phenomenon and a social institution in different periods and cultures. Authors and plays discussed during the weekly meetings are by Plautus, Machiavelli, Zeami, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson.

Description
WRITTEN EXAMINATION
The students have to respond to two categories of questions:
1. Multiple choice (70%).
2. Brief essay with explanation of your answer in two of the multiple choice questions (30%).
At the same time, course attendance, adequate preparaton (reading the plays for each course), as well participation in the discussion will also be taken into consideration.
This information is printed on the course syllabus, which is distributed in class and uploaded on the course E-learning site.
