Learning Outcomes
Students completing the course successfully are expected to: • Understand fundamental concepts of music informatics • Have an introductory view of computational applications in topics such as digitial audio, sound analysis, signal processing, sound synthesis, the MIDI protocol, score editing, sequencing, multimedia in music education. • Use competently score processing programs for western and byzantine notation (Finale, EZ-Byzantine, Pandouris) • Understand digital sound representation issues and use sound analysis software (Sonic Visualiser) • Learn theoretical and practical elements of sound processing (Adobe Audition) • Have a basic understanding of contemporary interdisciplinary research topics that deal with the development of ‘intelligent’ music systems

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course introduces basic concepts of music technology and informatics giving emphasis in specific practical music applications. Topics such as digitial audio, sound analysis, signal processing, sound synthesis, the MIDI protocol, sequencing, multimedia in music education, are presented; additionally contemporary research topics that deal with the development of ‘intelligent’ music systems are addressed. Introduction. Western music notation systems (I, II, III). Byzantine music notation software. Digital audio and sound analysis (I, II). Sound processing and editing (I, II). Sound synthesis and electroacoustic music. MIDI and sequencing. Music education multimedia applications. Computational models in music.

Student Assessment
Description
A series of compulsory lab excersices (without grading) are a prerequisite for the final exam. The final exam consists of a theoretical multiple-choice test (50%) and practical evaluation test in the computer lab (50%).
